The Normans, recognising its strategic importance, established a fortification here in the 13th century. This led to the town’s initial growth.
Some of the walls are still around to this day! You can find them at

What do you think? Is fine weather to come? 👇
There’s an old piseóg (folk belief) that says the weather follows the heron.
If a heron flies with the river, you can expect some fine weather days
If a heron flies against the river, nothing but rain is on the way
When you see one gliding with the river, like this beauty over the Suir, it’s a sure sign that finer days are just around the hill 🤞
As we move into February and the light begins to stretch, it’s the perfect time to grab a coffee in Carrick on Sur and take a scenic stroll along the Suir Blueway to see what gems you can uncover 🤭
