Waterford Greenway at Mount Congreve

The scenic Waterford Greenway traces the coastline, following old railway tracks from bustling Waterford City, through the foothills of the Comeragh Mountains, and into the charming harbour town of Dungarvan. Whether you walk a portion, cycle both directions, or bike one way and catch a bus back, the 46km route is ideal for a short getaway. Along the way, enjoy numerous pit stops and trailside attractions that make the journey unforgettable.

Hop off the train at Plunkett Station or park nearby, just minutes from the start of the Greenway. Waterford Greenway Bike Hire is ready with bikes, e-bikes, safety gear, and trailers for the kids. As you pedal out of the city along the River Suir, you’ll soon reach Mount Congreve Estate Gardens, an 18th-century Georgian estate and one of the world’s great gardens. Enjoy coffee and homemade cake on the café terrace before continuing your journey.

Just 2km along, listen for the toot of the Waterford & Suir Valley Railway. Park your bike and hop on a restored carriage to see parts of Waterford only accessible by rail. Then, it’s back to the Greenway and on to Kilmacthomas. The trail winds around the base of the Comeragh Mountains and under the towering Kilmacthomas Viaduct, all while staying flat and easy to navigate. Kilmacthomas is a popular stop, perfect for a break or to start your ride if you’re renting from Waterford Greenway Cycle Tours and Bike Hire.

Recharge with a coffee at Coach House Coffee, set in an old Famine workhouse, right off the Greenway. Enjoy a latte on the patio with fellow cyclists and grab a dessert for an energy boost before tackling the final 23km to Dungarvan.
