The Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre is located in a restored former Protestant church that was part of the pre-Reformation burial ground of Carrick Mor. The site features notable gravestones, including a memorial to Thomas Butler, an illegitimate son of the 10th Earl of Ormond, and Dorothea Herbert, an 18th-century author. The centre showcases local artifacts and photographs, providing a deep dive into the town’s history.

The Heritage Centre is closed at the moment for improvement works.

The Pre-Reformation burial ground and church site of Carrick Mor (Big Carrick) features the former Protestant Church, now restored as a Heritage Centre.

The Heritage Centre in Carrick-on-Suir houses a Failte Ireland-approved Visitor Information Point with knowledgeable staff ready to guide you through local attractions. Located off Main Street, with rear access from Town Wall, the Centre stands on the site of a 13th-century church and showcases local memorabilia and artifacts.

Explore the grounds to see intriguing headstones, including a memorial to Thomas Butler (d.1604) an illegitimate son of Thomas, 10th Earl of Ormond. Buried here also is Dorothea Herbert (1770-1829), author of “Retrospections”.

Inside, numerous local artefacts and photographs are on display. Also on display is the 17th century Duke of Ormonde Church Plate Collection and the Sonny Cash photographic exhibition, featuring images of Carrick-on-Suir from 1902 to 1917.

Every Friday, the grounds host a Farmers Market with local produce.
