A new story rising on the South Quays
Explore Carrick on Suir is proud to unveil an inspiring new public artwork now transforming the skyline of our historic town. Created by internationally renowned artist Fintan Magee, The Tides of Time mural celebrates the deep connection between our people, our heritage and the River Suir that shapes our identity.
Standing tall on the Tierlon building at the riverfront, this beautiful and meaningful work is the first public expression of what is to come with the Tides of Time project at the Carrick on Suir Heritage Centre. The mural is an invitation for everyone to pause, to look closer and to rediscover the stories of our place through art.
About the Artist
Fintan Magee is a celebrated painter and muralist from Brisbane Australia. His large scale public artworks can be found in over thirty countries including Denmark, France Germany Colombia the United States and Argentina. Known for his dreamlike style Fintan blends delicate portraiture with themes of environment memory and resilience. He brings together the past and the present to reveal the quiet strength of communities and the hidden stories that deserve to be seen.
During his time in Carrick on Suir he generously shared his skills and experience with local schools and community members. Students from Comeragh College had the rare opportunity to learn techniques directly from an artist working at the highest level and they proudly contributed to the early stages of the piece.
A Mural with Meaning
The Tides of Time mural is rooted in the unique identity of Carrick on Suir. Inspired by our river and its history it includes native wildflowers which hold a quiet symbolism of our community spirit.
This work explores the natural beauty of the River Suir and both the natural and human histories of the river. Inspired by the botanica along the river bank the mural includes local and introduced flower species. Marsh Marigold, Water forget me not, Purple Loostrife and fleabane. The species of plants along the river are both native and introduced, the later introduced plants came from all over the world, arriving on boats. Highlighting the importance of the river as a place for trade and cultural exchange.
Overlayed on the flower painting is a series of black and white images depicting different moments in the history of Carrick on suir and the River. One image depicts Cot
boats on the river, Horses pulling boats along the towpath and an image of the Ormond Castle grounds.
The work contrasts the old and new, presenting natural heritage and human history in juxtaposition.
Community Art for a Thriving Town
The new Heritage Centre Interpretation is supported by the EU Just Transition and Failte Ireland reflects our shared commitment to revitalising our town centre, building pride and expanding cultural experiences for both residents and visitors. The mural is just the start of a vibrant creative programme that will continue to unfold over the coming months.
Together we are celebrating who we are and what we can become.
Together we are writing the next chapter of Carrick on Suir.
