Knockelly, a historic gem with over 550 years of rich heritage, started as a Jacobean gentleman’s residence and has since been a stronghold for the Earls of Ormond, a land agent’s home for the Grove estate, and most recently, a sophisticated farmyard. It offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland’s social and architectural evolution, brimming with tales of romance and local folklore. Over its long history, only five families have been the stewards of this remarkable site.
Knockelly comprises several structures, including a tower house from the mid-1460s, last revamped in 1610. The site also features 19th-century farm buildings, all enclosed within a 1560 bawn wall. This wall boasts gun turrets, bartizans (protruding lookout platforms), and a gate tower, which underwent its latest transformation in 1830. Knockelly stands as a testament to Ireland’s storied past and architectural ingenuity.
