A week ago we had the huge pleasure of speaking to the legendary Claire Moore race-side at Stage 3 of this year’s Rás na mBan in Carrick-on-Suir! @rasnamban

Claire has achieved so much in her cycling career; no less than 14 national titles, Claire holds the record of four overall victories in Ireland’s annual international stage race - 1988, 1992, 1993 and 1998, years preceding but leading to the event now known as Rás na mBan.

Joining Carrick Wheelers at fifteen with a second-hand bike from O’K Cycles, Claire raced for about 35 years, as she says in this clip. Claire also won two stage wins one year at the John Hearn Memorial race, which was 40 years old this year. @okcycles 🚴‍♀️

Thinking about Carrick’s rich history of cycling ahead of Rás na mBan this Friday! @rasnamban 🚴‍♀️

Filming in July outside the iconic O’K Cycles, we were lucky enough to meet hinterland locals Ethel and her son Harry outside her absolute “favourite shop”. @okcycles @ethel_power ⭐️

Our audio is unfortunately a little blustery, but Ethel shared with us a priceless memory of heading here with her five siblings after the cattle mart; each child test-riding bikes outside so Shane’s father, John, could recommend their best match.

We’re excited to see incredible women - both local and visiting - leading the charge this Friday in Rás na mBan (pronounced “Raws na mon” aka the “women’s race”).

📍 Where to catch the Stage 3 action this Friday:
11:00 AM: Rollout begins across the river in Carrickbeg.
11:15 AM: Official race start flag drops in Carrick-on-Suir as the peloton heads out.
1:40 PM – 2:10 PM: Expected finish line sprint back in Carrick-on-Suir after the steep descent of Seskin Hill (riders expected around 1:55 PM).

We hope great numbers get out and give the race’s participants a massive Carrick cheer! 🚲✨

In light of the recent fire devastation across Tipperary, Waterford and many parts of the country, it really hits home just how valuable the pockets of nature on our doorstep really are.

In Carrick-on-Suir, the Carrickbeg Biodiversity Trail around the Bog Fields and St. Molleran’s Church is perfect for an easy, peaceful stroll. As you wander, keep an eye out for the ancient churchyard yew tree, herons and swifts skimming the wetland edges, and wild meadowsweet humming with native pollinators. You should also come across our fantastic mural from @fintan_magee in collaboration with @tidesoftimevisitorcentre 🎨

Originally founded in 1907, there is so much important Carrick-on-Suir heritage under one roof at O’K Cycles. Shane is the third generation of O’Keeffes to run this local gem, having been a regular fixture on the shop floor since age twelve.

The family tradition continues with his nephew Sam, who works in the shop and plays with fantastic local band, Charcoal Greys. We also met Keith Barry, an incredible mechanic who first started with the crew in 1989 when he was eighteen. @charcoalgreysband 🎸

It’s fantastic to see such community spirit and cycling passion solidly centred in the heart of town.

On our way to visit O’K Cycles for a shop tour (more on that later 👀), we met some longtime friends and patrons of this fantastic family-owned gem. Pascal Lonergan from Dove Hill generously chatted to us and let us take pictures of his amazing Raleigh vintage bike, previously owned by his father and bought from Shane’s father John in 1985.

We recently caught up with two Carrick-on-Suir locals and school-friends outside the ‘Tides of Time’ mural, painted by international artist Fintan Magee @fintan_magee ✨

Tony from Carrickbeg (the Waterford side) and Gerry from Carrickmore (the Tipperary side) told us about summers spent playing in the Suir and the playful rivalry between both sides of the town. It’s a shared Carrick memory to have swam at Friar’s Rock - did you spend your childhood summers taking a dip there too?

This stunning piece of art behind Tony and Gerry was created to celebrate the Tides of Time Visitor Centre project and the Carrick people’s longlasting connection to the River Suir. The work features native and introduced wildflowers - such as Marsh Marigold, Water forget-me-not, Purple Loosestrife, and fleabane - that symbolise the community spirit and the town’s history of trade and cultural exchange.

Closer to home, ‘Twin Hearts Meditation’ sessions take place July 15th 6:30pm-7:30pm at the Nano Nagle Resource Centre, Carrick-on-Suir.
